Here at Carelink24, we're all about keeping elderly people safe and confident in their homes. Falls are one of the most common fears among older people, but this needn't be the case. While we are more likely to fall as we get older, we don't need to live in fear of falling. Devices like fall alarms for elderly people are a simple, affordable solution.
Elderly People & Falls
According to the NHS, one in three people aged 65 and over who live at home will suffer from at least one fall each year. What's more, around half of these people will likely have multiple falls. Elderly people, especially those with long-term conditions like arthritis and osteoporosis, are most likely to suffer from a fall.
Falls can have a serious impact on older people. Besides physical injuries such as broken bones, a fall can cause a significant knock to your confidence. Falls also cost the NHS an estimated £2.3 billion per year. UK Government statistics revealed that falls are the number one cause of emergency hospital admissions among older people.
This is where Carelink24 can help. Our fall detector alarms ensure that there is always somebody to come and help you should you fall.
Fall Detector Alarm: How it works
The Fall Detector alarm will detect if the wearer suffers from a fall and will automatically call our 24/7 care team for help – even if you can’t press the help button. Simply wear the pendant around your neck with the cord provided.
The fall alarm is programmed to the wearer's height and contains a built-in sensor that can detect a sudden drop in altitude. It is water-resistant, which means you can wear it in the bath or shower where falls are relatively common. You can also press the button on the face of the fall detector alarm to call for help at any time.
Don’t worry if you ever press the help button by accident – false alarms are never a problem. Just let it ring through to our Care Team and let them know you are okay. We will be glad to know you are alright and you can rest assured that your fall alarm system is working perfectly.
Falls: Risk Factors
Unfortunately, the older we get, the more likely we are to suffer from a fall. We have already mentioned that one in three people aged 65 and over will suffer from at least one fall per year but falls are also the most common cause of injury-related deaths for people over the age of 75. This is something that we hope to prevent with our fall detector alarms.
The risk factors below can make you more likely to have a fall.
1. Balance problems
2. Muscle weakness
3. Poor vision
4. A long-term medical condition such as arthritis or dementia
5. Low blood pressure which could cause dizziness
If any of these factors apply to you, we would strongly advise you to install a Fall Detector alarm in your home. This will help to minimise the risks associated with falls.
