With no less than six blockbuster movies being released this year based on comic book superheroes, 2017 is undoubtedly going to be a year full of high action, heart-pounding special effects and supernova box office opening weekends.
We’ve already sat back and enjoyed some great movies at our local cinema throughout the first half of the year, including smash hit films such as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, Logan, Power Rangers and Fast and Furious 8.
Some great titles already mentioned there but 2017 is far from done and we have some great entertainment heading our way during the remainder of the year.
So, let’s get the ball rolling and first we have…
Spiderman Homecoming
Marvel Studios finally have their hands on Spiderman, which means we’re getting yet another reboot. Spiderman made his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) during the Captain America: Civil War movie.
Young Peter Parker has since returned to his home in New York and has been taken under the wing of Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr. Trouble isn’t far away though as the evil Vulture emerges from the shadows to take on the webbed crusader.
Peter must balance his every-day life alongside his desire to become an Avenger in order to save the people most important to him.

Dunkirk
Tom Hardy stars is this World War Two movie, which is based on the Dunkirk Evacuation. The movie will see allied soldiers from Britain, Canada, Belgium and France being surrounded by German forces on the beaches and harbour of Dunkirk, France.
The movie is directed by Christopher Nolan, the man behind the popular Dark Knight Trilogy and Inception. Viewers will see first-hand the difficulties faces by the allied soldiers and the astonishing efforts made by those who help to evacuate them from the beeches of Dunkirk during Operation Dynamo – May 26 – June 4, 1940.
Also look out for an appearance by Harry Styles, formerly of One Direction.

Murder on the Orient Express
Based on the 1934 novel of the same name, by Dame Agatha Christie, this film remake boasts a highly talented cast of British and Hollywood superstars. Judi Dench, Willem Dafoe, Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer are but to name a few of the powerhouse stars involved in the telling of this classic tale. Kenneth Branagh takes the helm of this project as director and plays the iconic and long-lived character, Hercule Poirot.
This visual depiction of Christie’s absolute classic involving the iconic acting pedigree will bring the intriguing and charismatic group of characters to life on board the famous locomotive. It is no doubt that this adaptation will be full of suspense and behold captivating performances that will be talked about by everyone as Poirot uncovers the murderous plot.
Whilst the movie from 1974 is widely considered to be the most successful adaptation to date it will hardly be surprising if this new adaptation overshadows that of its predecessor with Branagh and the feature all-star cast bringing their version to the big screen.

The Greatest Showman
A biographical musical drama starring Hugh Jackman, the man of many traits, portraying the American showman P.T. Barnum, the founder of the Barnum and Bailey Circus – once dubbed The greatest show on Earth, which wowed fans from the early 1900’s.
The story, although based around Barnum himself, will also focus on Barnum’s infatuation with ‘The Swedish Nightingale’ – Jenny Lind (played by Rebecca Ferguson). A musical film about a man who was made famous for promoting hoaxes and feeding off the curiosity of his viewers is undeniably going to be optical parade for all and whom will find themselves relocated back in time to the very same seats as those who went to witness P.T Barnum and his circus in action all that time ago.
Hugh Jackman was masterful in Les Miserables with his impressive vocal performance as Jean Valjean and bringing his talents again to another leading musical role he will be in a perfect position to steal the show and wow us all. Opening at the end of the year, where the release of the new Star Wars movie will likely be the focal point of cinema release, this film is again a must see and it will excite, educate and entertain us all.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi
The latest installment in the Star Wars Sequel has been confirmed and it will be called The Last Jedi and will follow-on from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Not much has been revealed about the plot but the movie is expected to follow Ray on her epic journey as she begins her Jedi training with Luke Skywalker. Whether or not the title is plural is also another mystery – just how many Jedi are left and able to help?
The Last Jedi will feature Carrie Fisher as General Leia and was the final film she worked on before her death last December. Leia will be joined in the movie by her evil son, Kylo Ren, as he looks to destroy the remaining Jedi.

Well there you have it; from a mammoth selection of films gracing the big screen this year, we managed to make a selection and narrow them down to our top five picks for 2017 and we certainly hope that they live up to their potential and leave us all flabbergasted.
